COMMUNITY COUNCIL ON EDUCATION

CULTIVATING
LOCAL CHAMPIONS

The Flint Center for Educational Excellence is positioned to support the Flint community in shifting the conversation about education to the larger educational ecosystem that impacts all Flint kids through the development of the Flint Community Council on Education (Community Council). Through a community-driven process, we seek to cultivate local champions to grapple with the current education challenges in Flint and co-construct strategies for long-term success. The Community Council is not intended to circumvent the governing bodies of school districts, but rather, it will work inclusively with government officials and other stakeholders, forming a collective group committed to enhancing the education ecosystem in Flint. The Flint Center will coordinate the Community Council, providing the organization and the broader community with a critical lever to impact change.

Purpose and Objectives

The overarching aim of the Community Council is to improve access and outcomes for Flint students by shifting and sharing power with the community in a way that accounts for and transcends the current dynamics in the Flint education/nonprofit/foundation ecosystem. Community Council members serve a vital role in contributing to the improvement of education access and outcomes for children and families in Flint by addressing following objectives:

  1. Contributing to the understanding and knowledge building of the educational environment in Flint, thereby providing a solid foundation for effective and informed decision-making.
  2. Amplifying the needs, perspectives, and current realities of children and families in Flint, ensuring that these critical voices form the cornerstone of all discussions and actions.
  3. Cultivating community engagement, which encourages a shared sense of responsibility and investment in local education.
  4. Creating opportunities for the implementation of initiatives that align with council priorities, effectively turning strategic plans into tangible actions for the benefit of Flint's schools.
  5. Making local and state educational policy recommendations based on their deep understanding of the community's needs and priorities, which influences broader educational strategies and regulations.
